Movie About a Blackfeet Tribe’s Only Female War Chief Begins Filming in Montana This Summer
Montana is rich with history and more often than not, some of the best stories to come out of Montana sound like something out of a movie.
And now that's actually happening with one of Montana's most incredible stories.
Pre-Production Has Begun for an Upcoming Film About a Montana Legend
According to a press release from Great Falls Montana Tourism, the Montana-based film Running Eagle is in pre-production and will tell the story of Pi'tamaka, also known as Running Eagle, a 19th-century Blackfeet warrior and the tribe's only female war chief.
"As Women’s History Month approaches, a groundbreaking film project is set to illuminate the extraordinary story of Pi’tamaka, known as Running Eagle, the only female war council leader in Blackfeet history," the press release reads.

"This 19th-century warrior defied societal norms to lead her people, and her powerful narrative is poised to resonate deeply in today’s conversations about Indigenous rights and women's empowerment."
Who Is Directing The Film Running Eagle?
The man who will be directing the film is none other than Great Falls native and filmmaker Stu Brumbaugh, who has a wealth of experience and involvement in over a thousand productions.
Among them was his directorial debut with the film Iron Ridge, which takes place exclusively in Montana. Brumbaugh emphasizes the importance of maintaining authenticity when filming in Montana.

"This story belongs to this land," Stu Brumbaugh, a native of Great Falls and lifelong horseman said, "Montana is not just a backdrop; it’s a character in this tale, and our filming here will honor Pi’tamaka’s legacy with authenticity and scale."
Stu had the opportunity to interview with 560 KMON and shared more important details about the project.
Filming will begin later this summer in Great Falls and in Browning on the Blackfeet Reservation. The film will also feature Blackfeet stunt performer, actress, and 2025 Indian National Finals Rodeo Breakaway World Champion, Megan Lunak. Lunak will be the stunt double and Blackfeet cultural liaison for the film.
