Stepping Back in Time To 1867 – Montana’s Oldest Cemetery

Stepping back in time in Montana is one of the easiest things that you can do in this great state.  You only need to step out of your back door and into the Big Sky country to find any number of ways to take that trip.  We have amazing architecture from the turn of the 19th to 20th century, incredible museums filled to the brim with even more wonderful artifacts and memories, to still operating businesses that started back in the 1800's.

Without Starting a Fight, Is This the Oldest Profession?

There are some circles that proclaim another profession may be the oldest, the caretaker at the cemetery has to be at the top or one of the two at the top of list of oldest professions.  In Montana, cemeteries came after many family plots were established on homestead property.  However, in one particular town, we can date the headstones back to at least 1867.

Where To Find This Place of Peace and Resting in Montana

Located in historical Helena, Montana the Home of Peace is the state's oldest recognized cemetery.  Established in 1867, the original cast iron fence still stands around parts of the grounds, and has been dated back to the mid 1800's, along with the arched gateway which was added in 1901.  There are even gravestones from the Spanish-American war from veterans of the time.
