• In a partnership with the Montana Historical Society, people can tour the state capitol building for free
• Tours are given twice per day with a limit of 20 people per tour time during the week
• Tours provide insight into the history, art, and architecture of the building while offering an introduction to the political process

This is How to Tour Montana's State Capitol for FREE

When I attended junior high and high school, one of the highlights for me was the opportunity to travel to Helena, Montana to view our legislature in action.  And maybe even the chance to see areas that aren't normally open to everyone.

Now, thanks to the help of the Montana Historical Society, everyone can have that same chance to view the incredible building, and the history and items within its walls.  Plus, a chance to see just what our elected officials are doing at the capitol.

Tours Available During the Current Montana Legislative Session for 2025

As the 90 days of the 69th legislative session is under way, the Montana Historical Society is offering free tours of the state capitol.  The tours are a special feature, as noted by the MHS:

Our tour guides move their groups expertly through the building’s bustle and highlight important aspects of the Capitol and the 90-day legislative session.  “If you’ve never been to the Capitol during the legislative session, our Capitol tours are the perfect introduction,” says museum education officer Darby Bramble.

Self-Guided Tours Are Also Available for the Montana State Capitol Building

The Capitol building is open Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., and weekends, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and feature self-guided tours during those times.

• Self-guiding tour booklets and a scavenger hunt for kids led by Lewis and Clark’s intrepid Newfoundland, Seaman, are available at the first-floor information desk.
