If you have friends or family planning on coming to Montana soon, they might want to listen to this advice.

Tourism is a crucial part of Montana's economy, and many towns survive on visitors spending money at their establishments. Hotels, restaurants, and outdoor adventure businesses thrive on these folks.

Visiting Montana should be a fun experience, but locals know it can be overcrowded, expensive, and annoying during certain parts of the year. Some places like Yellowstone or Glacier National Park can be slammed with visitors and ruin vacations.

So, when is the best time to visit Montana? Travel & Leisure might have an idea.

Travel & Leisure published a comprehensive itinerary on when you should visit Montana. Travel & Leisure lays out what towns you should travel to in Montana, what months, and how to save money.

Usually, these sites don't get anything right, but Travel & Leisure used a phrase many Montanans use during our slow seasons. That phrase is shoulder seasons.

Shoulder seasons or months are known in tourist areas or towns as dates when tourists don't travel as much or visit the desired location. These times of the year mean more affordable prices, smaller crowds, and a more unique experience.

One thing to note is during these shoulder seasons, you might not have access to all amenities or activities during the peak months, but you can still enjoy most of what Montana has to offer.

One of my favorite vacations was visiting Gardiner during a shoulder season. It was incredible. Zero crowds, beautiful weather, and the whole town was quiet but still filled with locals.
